Francisco Duarte, a longtime San Diego street vendor whose farewell message gained widespread attention, has left the United States after nearly three decades of living and working in the region.

Duarte, 59, departed in October following the expiration of his temporary residency permit and the conclusion of a prolonged immigration case, according to his family. He has since relocated to Tijuana, where he plans to begin a new chapter of his life. For more than 25 years, Duarte sold paletas and other frozen treats in neighborhoods across South Bay San Diego, becoming a familiar sight to residents and local businesses. His steady presence and friendly manner made him a recognizable figure in areas such as Logan Heights and Southcrest.

His departure followed a final immigration order issued earlier this year. Noticias Telemundo reported that Duarte decided not to continue appealing the case after his permit expired, choosing instead to return voluntarily to Mexico.

In a brief farewell video that circulated online, Duarte thanked San Diegans for their kindness and support over the years.

“This country gave me opportunities,” he said. “I’m leaving in peace, grateful for everything.”

U.S. immigration officials declined to comment on the specifics of Duarte’s case, citing privacy regulations. Now in Tijuana, Duarte and his wife are adjusting to a new routine while exploring plans to open a small food business. His four adult children remain in the United States.

Duarte’s story continues to resonate locally, shared across social media as a reflection of community ties that extend beyond borders.
